Inspect that your modem is set to work at the highest available connection speed. The fastest data transmitting rate for a dial-up modem is 56kbps (kilobytes per second.) Click the Windows button at the lower left corner on your screen.

Locate and double left click the "Modems" icon from the opening window. This will bring you to the "General" tab.

Click "Properties" at the top of the window. The speed is set at 9600bps by default. To make sure the connection speed is always at the optimal rate, slide the "bits per second" bar all the way to 115200bps (115K.) There should be no check mark in the "Only connect at this speed" box.

Click the "Connection" tab at the top of the window. Choose "None" for parity, "8" for data bits and "1" for stop bits.

Go to "Port Settings" and slide the "Receive Buffer" bar to the far right where it says "High." Click "OK" to complete the port settings. Close all other windows to complete the dial-up modem tweak.

Close all online programs or website windows that you are not using as they occupy unnecessary bandwidth. These include instant messenger, e-mail clients, social networking accounts and other open but idling Web pages. Keep in mind that Web-page windows or tabs not in use, particularly those that have animated advertisements, still are using a considerable amount of bandwidth.

Empty your Internet cache, also called temporary Internet files, once per month, but not more often than that. Internet cache is a special folder for storing the links and data of the websites that you have visited. The Internet cache improves connection speed when you revisit websites since text, images and other files will first be loaded from your hard drive instead of from the Internet. The browser only will need to load the updates, if available, from the actual website that you are revisiting. Then again, those updates will be stored in the cache for that website for future loading. However, emptying the Internet cache does free up space on your hard disk.

Download or purchase videos, music or games rather than going to the providing websites all the time. Loading these types of files from your hard disk is faster than fetching them from the Internet.

Save the entire Web page to your hard disk. You can read it later offline when the Internet is busy or when your dial-up speed is slow. Click "File" at the top of your browser window, select "Save as..." to choose a saving destination, give the Web page a file name and click "Save."

Subscribe to a speedier, more reputable DNS server if you run a website or blog. DNS servers that provide higher speeds will improve your Internet reliability and connection. DNS stands for Domain Name System. Ask your hosting company for its DNS server speed.

Click "Cleaner" on the left side of Ccleaner's interface and select the "Applications" tab.

Click to place a check mark next to "Cookies" for the option for Firefox/Mozilla to delete the text files that are saved on your drive when you visit a website. The cookie file keeps track of details such as your user name. Cleaning the cookies is not recommended if you have log-in information saved that you don't remember or don't want remove

Check "Download History" to remove the information Firefox saves whenever you download a file.

Place a check by "Internet History." This will delete the list of previously viewed websites seen in the history tab in the top menu.

Check "Saved Form Information" and any information typed in forms will be deleted. Saved forms are helpful when re-entering forms because Firefox will display a pop-up you can click instead of typing the information each time. On the other hand, this information can be seen by anyone who uses your computer, so deleting it will protect your privacy.

Scroll down to view the other options that are checked by default. If you only wish to clean Mozilla Firefox, remove all remaining check marks in the list.

Click "Analyze." The program will scan and tell you how much space will be recovered if you run the cleaner.
