How to See What Programs Run at Computer Start Up

Discovering which programs are loaded into system memory at startup can help to diagnose and troubleshoot a slow computer. As you install new programs on your computer, the installation routines in these programs often enable each program to load a small portion of its services into memory at startup. Over time, this
can bog down your computer's speed because more and more programs are demanding the computer's "time" as it loads.

Instructions

    • 1
Open the "Start" menu, then click "Run."
    • 2
Type "msconfig," then press "Enter." MSConfig is a utility within the operating system that will enable you to see what is occurring as your computer is loading.
    •
    • 3
Click on the "Startup" tab. Every item in this list with a checked box by its name is loading into memory when the computer boots up.

Tips & Warnings

·         To speed up your computer, go through the list and uncheck all the boxes for programs you either do not recognize or do not need in your system memory when the machine is loading.
