Why The Mouse Pointer Slows Down on the Desktop Only in Windows XP

If you have Windows XP and another operating system installed on the same computer, a process that is known as dual booting, it may become especially obvious if the mouse is slower in Windows XP. A slower mouse pointer moves a shorter distance with the same gesture than a faster setting. This requires you to make
more gestures to move the same distance as a faster setting and may become frustrating.

1.   Possible Cause

o        If your computer's mouse slows down when you use Windows XP, the mouse settings for that operating system are likely set to work more slowly than other installed operating systems. This could be the difference between the default mouse speeds on each operating system. For example, Linux may have faster mouse settings. It could also be due to someone else who uses the computer changing the settings.

Windows Mouse Speed

o        Microsoft makes it relatively simple to change the speed of your mouse and other settings. Simply open the Control Panel from the "Start" menu, click "Hardware" and choose "Mouse." Click to open the "Pointer Options" tab and move the "Pointer Speed" slider toward fast to increase its speed. Click "OK" to exit the settings screen and return to the control panel, which you can also close.

Considerations

o        If you are using a laptop computer, you can use a mouse as well as the native trackpad. The mouse speed settings in the Windows control panel affect \the mouse and the touchpad. You can change the double-click speed of the mouse buttons, which determines how quickly you must perform a double-click to complete actions such as open a folder. In addition to this, you can change the scroll wheel speed, which affects how many lines or screens move when your finger moves the scroll wheel one notch. These are all separate settings in the mouse section.

Matching Mouse Speeds

o        Matching the mouse speeds between multiple operating systems on the same computer may be difficult because you cannot compare the sliders simultaneously, and the minimum and maximum mouse speeds may not be the same. Although the Windows control panel shows increments on the slider, operating systems such as Ubuntu -- a variation of Linux -- do not show increments to help you more precisely adjust mouse speed. In Linux, you can change the mouse speed by clicking "System," "Preferences," then "Mouse." Look for the "Motion" tab in RedHat or the "General" tab with Ubuntu.
