How to See the Temperature of Your Processor

A computer central processing unit (CPU) can perform millions of calculations each second to perform the operations that users demand of the computer. The more processes and calculations a CPU performs, the more power it must draw from the power supply, which can result in higher CPU temperatures. CPUs are
typically outfitted with a heat sink and fan to dispel heat, but if the CPU runs too hot it can cause errors. You can check CPU temperature by entering your system's BIOS setup utility.

Instructions

    • 1
Restart your computer.
    • 2
Press the proper keyboard key to access the BIOS setup utility. Your computer may display the proper key as your computer starts up with text similar to "Press Delete to Enter Setup." Common keys include "Delete," "Escape" and the function keys. Refer to your computer manual if you cannot determine the appropriate key. You may have to restart your computer again to enter setup if you do not press the right key before the computer loads the operating system.

Note the BIOS navigation instructions on the screen. Your BIOS should have a list of key commands on the screen that you can use to navigate your BIOS menus. Typically you use the arrow keys to change your current selection; use the "Enter" key to select items and enter menus and the "Escape" key to exit.

Use the navigation instructions in your BIOS to select and enter the "Hardware Monitor" Menu. The exact menu names will vary from one BIOS to the next. If you do not have a "Hardware Monitor" option look for a similar menu title such as "System Health," "PC Health Status" or "H/W Monitor." Your current CPU temperature will be listed in a field called "CPU Temperature," "CPU temp" or something similar.

Press the appropriate key to exit BIOS setup. Typically you will have to press the escape key to exit. Once you exit BIOS your computer will start up normally.
