How to Access the DOS Prompt at Computer Start Up

Microsoft first introduced the Microsoft Disk Operating System, MS-DOS, in August of 1981. Created for IBM-compatible computers, DOS is a non-graphical, command line operating system. MS-DOS 6.22, released in 1994, was the last DOS system released by Microsoft. All Windows operating systems beginning
with Windows XP now have a modified and limited version of DOS that is accessed through the "Command Prompt." Although the DOS system is not commonly used today, the DOS command shell is still in use.

Instructions

1.   Windows 98

Turn on the computer.

Press the "F8" function key on the top row of the keyboard repeatedly prior to the Windows program startup.

Click on the option to "Start in Safe Mode with DOS prompt."

2.   Windows XP Home and Professional Versions

Turn on the computer.

Wait for Windows XP to load.

Click on the "Start" button. Hover over the "All Programs" button.

Hover over the "Accessories" button. Click on the "Command Prompt" button. The "Command Prompt" is a limited access "DOS Prompt."

3.   Alternate Windows XP Method

Turn on the computer.

Press the "F8" function key on the top row of the keyboard repeatedly prior to Windows XP loading.

Click on the "Start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt" button.

4.   Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista and 7 Systems

Turn on the computer. Wait for the Windows operating system to load.

Click on the "Start" button.

Click on the "Run" button.

Type in "CMD" or "Command" in the text box. Press the "Enter" button.
